October marks Polish-American Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich history, culture, and contributions of Polish Americans across the United States.
The Polish National Alliance, headquartered on Chicago’s northwest side, has proudly served the Polish-American community for 145 years. Since its founding in 1880, the PNA has supported cultural, educational, and charitable initiatives, helping to preserve and promote Polish heritage for generations.

Polish-American Population Highlights:
- United States: Approximately 8.6 million Americans of Polish ancestry (alone or in combination), representing 6% of the U.S. population.
- Illinois: Roughly 930,000 residents of Polish descent, or 10% of the state’s population.
- Chicago Metropolitan Area: Nearly 900,000 people of Polish ancestry, making it the largest Polish metropolitan community outside of Poland.

- Early Arrivals: The first Polish settlers came to the United States in the 1600s, primarily in Jamestown, Virginia.
- 19th Century Immigration: Large waves arrived in the late 1800s and early 1900s, fleeing poverty and political oppression under the partitions of Poland.
- Communities: Polish Americans established vibrant neighborhoods, particularly in Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, and Buffalo.
- Labor & Industry: Many early immigrants worked in steel mills, factories, mines, and on the railroads.
